Over my years as a Professional Storyteller and Author, I have traveled in forty-four states and Puerto Rico, performing for tens of thousands of children and adults in schools, senior centers, Indian Reservations, and festivals. I met President Clinton, Congressmen, numerous governors, and other high-profile people. I have been shuttled around by the National Guard in a helicopter and had many other memorable adventures.
One day while taking a break between storytelling and book-signing at a B&N in my hometown, all of those other things I had done were eclipsed when a high school girl came up to me and said,
“I just wanted to tell you that you are my hero.”
That was probably the only time I was at a loss for words in my life.
She continued on to tell me that I had come to her school when she was in the 5th grade. This young lady told me she had learned that there was a difference between “bad choices” and “mistakes” and that her life was changed.
We talked for a bit longer and when it was time for me to go back to work she hugged me and said, “When I grow up and have kids I will tell them all your stories.”
I have always known that storytelling is a powerful teaching tool. That day I understood even better just how powerful words are and I have never looked at my art the same since. When I held storytelling workshops I started them with this statement:
Storytelling is powerful and with great power comes great responsibility.
P.s. I often imagine that young high school girl growing up with children of her own laughing, crying, and learning as she retells the stories she heard and I am.....well, humbled.
With great power comes great responsibility
